In addition to the best giant bluefin tuna fishing on planet Earth, La Gomera is blessed with a great blue marlin fishery, known for producing very good numbers of large blue marlin. What many fisherfolk don’t necessarily know, is that we are also spoilt with incredibly good fishing for other pelagics including world record sized bigeye tuna (this season has been spectacular on that front), large wahoo, mahi-mahi, albacore and skipjack tuna, amberjack and even very large bluefish!
Depending on the target species, trolling, jigging and sometimes casting tactics are deployed. Other than tuna, large numbers of good sized (30 to 60 pound) wahoo are our main target species from late October into February or March, when the focus shifts wholly to tuna. There are a lot of large wahoo to be found at various locations around the island and we’ve been very successful in bagging good hauls of wahoo, with the odd mahi-mahi thrown in for good measure. The photos that accompany this post are from two days (back to back) in mid October – the size of the fish are impressive, as is the number and the smiles say it all!
