The Canary Islands are blessed with a long season of often epic, world class fishing for blue marlin. La Gomera is, more often than not, the epicenter of the bite and serious sportfishing crews from all over the Canaries (and, indeed, the world) converge on La Gomera during the summer months. The early season has been very good, and the marlin have been large, blue marlin in the 600 to 700 pound range have already been caught already. Impi was lucky enough to catch numbers 2 and 3 (650 plus and 600 pounds) this season and we pulled the hook on a larger fish, all of this in our first 6 days of fishing at the end of May!
In addition to the blue marlin, that rarest of billfish, the shortbill spearfish, have made an appearance too and there have also been a few white marlin caught. All in all, it looks very promising for 2021 and, as we get into the heart of the season, we expect that many more blue marlin will be caught. When the fish show up in numbers, usually at the end of June and into July and beyond, the average size decreases to around 300 to 400 pounds, but some big mamas will be around too – fish well into the magical grander (1,000 pounds) range.
In addition to world class fishing for blue marlin, bigeye tuna, yellowfin tuna and other large pelagics, La Gomera offers a wealth of other activities too (golf, great hikes, wonderful food, very friendly locals, whale and dolphin watching, diving, the list goes on).
We cannot wait to see how 2021 pans out – come join us for that bucketlist experience!
